Although the risk-based thinking (RBT) requirements of ISO 9001:9001 are explicitly stated as not requiring a formal risk management process, organizations still need to determine what methods and tools they will use to facilitate RBT. Process failure mode and effects analysis (pFMEA) is one of the most comprehensive tools for assessing risk and has been in use for a long time in the aerospace and automotive industries, as well as medical device companies and hospitals. It provides a structured approach for reviewing a process to determine what risks exist and whether the level of risk, given the current prevention and detection controls, is considered acceptable.
