So what's different about Sailing Through Six Sigma? Most of the materials dedicated to Six Sigma to date have focused on its technical dimensions. In other words, they have focused on the tools, techniques, processes, and calculations associated with Six Sigma. We refer to this as the "The Science." It's science because it can be taught, practiced, and mastered. It's absolutely necessary, but not sufficient to ensure a successful implementation. Our experience shows that improvement efforts generally fail due to problems within management planning, practices, values, and behaviors. This is what we call "The Art." There are three major sections of Sailing Through Six Sigma: The Business Case for Six Sigma (Chapter 1), The Art of Six Sigma (Chapters 2-5), and The Science of Six Sigma (Chapters 6-7).
