SUMMARY

Project management is often misunderstood within the realm of a quality management system. In any industry processes and projects co-exist. A project as defined by the Project Management Institute (PMI) is “a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service.” The term “temporary” is often the confusing factor. The purpose of this webinar is to provide a means to bring order to the confusion and to help the participant realize that whether a “temporary endeavor” or an ongoing operational practice, a systematic approach to quality in projects is possible.

Projects are indeed temporary yet are often iterated and repeated using the same methods and procedures over and over and over again. A project as defined within ISO 10006:2003 – 3.5 is a “unique process consisting of a set of coordinated and controlled activities with start and finish dates, undertaken to achieve an objective conforming to specific requirements, including constraints of time, cost and resources.” Within this context, the confusion about managing projects is brought to order and context that the quality systems professional can understand and by which effectiveness can be measured.

Participants will be offered an overview of a quality systems approach to project management and a framework to assist in developing processes for project management in a quality management system. While this webinar is not intended to be a primer on project management or a how-to in regard to project management, it is intended to help any quality professional and/or project manager confused by the “temporary” nature of a project and its lack of connection to a quality management system. Webinar attendees will benefit greatly and have order brought about from confusion because projects and the associated management of them can be documented, planned and executed in a manner that is effective and repeatable!
